How to Stay on Track With Your Weight Loss Goals This Holiday Season

With the holiday season in full swing, maintaining a healthy lifestyle can be challenging. Parties and social gatherings are everywhere which means there’s a lot of delicious food and temptations around us.

Some of us restrict ourselves just to stay on track with our weight loss goals during this season. But it doesn’t have to be that way. You don’t have to restrict yourself to the point where you can’t enjoy anything. It’s not about deprivation, it’s all about focusing on your fitness goals and finding the right balance while enjoying the festivities.

Watch your portion sizes

For many of us, the holiday season is when we get together with our friends and families. And of course, if there are social gatherings, food is always present.

Practising portion control is a great way to prevent holiday weight gain. Watching your portion sizes can significantly help stop overeating and eliminate excess calories in your diet.

Start by skipping dinner plates and opt for salad or smaller plates instead. You can also use your plate as a portion guide to limit your total food intake. Visualize and divide your plate into sections based on different food groups. For instance, half of your plate should have vegetables and fruits, a quarter for protein and the remaining portion is for carbs. 

Doing this will allow you to control your intake and only eat what your body needs instead of overindulging.


Practice mindful eating 

We are often in a hurry during the holiday season, leading to rushed eating and multitasking during meals. Did you know that eating when distracted can make us overeat? A study has shown that eating when you’re not paying attention to your food can produce a moderate to a large increase in food intake. 

This is why it’s important to be mindful of the food you eat. Practising mindful eating can promote better digestion and it can also help avoid unhealthy habits around food. 

To help you relax, do simple breathing exercises before eating. This practice allows you to keep your full attention on your plate and get your digestive system ready to process the food.

Acknowledging what’s on your plate is also helpful. Look at the colours and textures of your food. As you chew, try to identify all the ingredients and savour the experience. Using all your senses will help you enjoy your food more and create awareness of how these foods affect your body. 


Prepare healthy dishes

Some of us consider Christmas and year-end events like our “cheat days.” However, if you really want to stay on track with your weight loss goals this season, you still need to moderate your food intake and eat healthy meals.

If you’re going to cook food for parties, try to make everything from scratch and modify the ingredients to make them healthier. For instance, instead of using butter and margarine, use coconut oil. If you plan to serve rice and mashed potatoes, why not make a healthier version using cauliflower. 

You can also make a spiced trail mix if you’re looking to serve some healthy snacks for your guests. It’s easy to make and great for gifting when packed in a mason jar. Check out the recipe below.


Spiced Trail Mix

Number of servings: 12
Calories: 318 cal per serving
Carbs: 3g
Protein: 6g
Fat: 31g
Fibre: 5g



  • 1 cup macadamia nuts
  • 1 cup almonds
  • 1 cup pecans
  • 1 cup flaked coconut
  • 2 tbs pumpkin seeds
  • 2 tbs sunflower seeds
  • 2 tbs coconut oil, melted
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp ground coriander
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp sea salt



  • Preheat the oven to 180C then line a baking tray with baking paper.
  • Roughly chop the macadamias, almonds and pecans. Add them to a large bowl and add the remaining ingredients. Stir to combine thoroughly.
  • Place the mixture on the baking tray and bake in the oven for 10 minutes. Remove from the oven and stir. Return to the oven and cook for an additional 5-10 minutes, or until the mix is golden in colour.
  • Watch the nuts carefully as they can burn quickly. 
  • Remove from the oven. Cool completely before storing in an airtight container. This recipe makes 12 portions so you may like to divide the mixture into individual portions so you don’t accidentally overindulge if eating on a HYPOXI day.
