Self-confidence is considered as one of the most powerful weapons we need in order to achieve a happy life. Being confident means you know your strengths and weaknesses well and accept yourself for who you are. It helps us strengthen our relationships, handle setbacks efficiently and attract success.

While we all know that having higher self-esteem is key to unlocking our full potential, many of us still struggle with lack of self-confidence. There are times when we feel doubtful of ourselves and we tend to focus on our flaws rather than our strengths.

If you’re finding it difficult to boost your confidence lately, don’t worry. There are plenty of things you can do that will help change your mindset and build confidence in your own little ways.

To celebrate International Boost Self Esteem Month, we’ve put together some tips on how you can improve your self-confidence this February and beyond.

Acknowledging success

Most of us tend to underappreciate the small wins in our lives. Recognising and celebrating your success, whether they are big or small, is actually a great way to build confidence. It helps broaden your perspective and motivates you to believe in yourself more.

A good exercise you can do daily is to write down your accomplishments. At the end of each day ask yourself, “What are you proud of today?” Again, it doesn’t have to be huge wins. It can be as simple as reading a chapter of a book, exercising for 30 minutes or eating a healthy meal. Answering this question will help you reflect on your achievements and prime yourself to be more confident.

Learn new skills

Learning new things might feel overwhelming and scary at first, but it allows you to improve yourself and get outside your comfort zone. It also provides you with more opportunities to help you grow as an individual.

If you want to learn something new, start by making a list and identify all the activities you want to try. This can include learning how to cook, crocheting, playing an instrument and more. After you’ve identified the things you want to do, start making an action plan on how you can hone your skills.

Learning is an ongoing process and it doesn’t matter if you learn a skill formally or all by yourself. What matters most is that you’re working towards improving yourself. By doing this, you’ll start to recognise that you’re capable of doing more things than expected.

Talk yourself up

Self-talk is a huge part of the puzzle when building confidence. When we feel down, we tend to say negative things about ourselves like “I can’t do it” or “I’m not worthy.” Having these thoughts hinders us from reaching peak performance.

Practising positive self-talk is an excellent way to reframe your thoughts into a more positive way of thinking. So if you ever find yourself engaging in negative self-talk, try shifting your attention to positive things happening in your life. For instance, instead of telling yourself “I can’t do this”, remind yourself that it doesn’t hurt to try. Talk to yourself like you would try to cheer your friends or family.

Surround yourself with positive people

People around you can influence your thoughts about yourself. Think about how your friends make you feel. Do they support you in your life decisions or bring you down? Do you feel good about yourself when you’re with them, or do you often feel upset?

Getting out of unhealthy relationships can be uncomfortable. But sometimes, all you have to do is step away, free yourself and take a break when things get overwhelming. Instead of spending your time and energy with negative people, focus on those who really support you.

Surrounding yourself with friends and family who lift you up and make you feel good can help build your confidence.

Practise self-care

Taking care of yourself mentally and physically is one of the most powerful ways to boost confidence. The better you feel about yourself, the more confident you become.

If you want to start practising self-care, start by doing things that will improve your well-being. For example, if you’re having a hard time sleeping, change your habits and establish a healthy sleeping routine. You can do this by limiting your caffeine intake or using mobile apps to calm your mind.

Studies have also shown that exercise promotes confidence. Aside from its health benefits, doing physical activities helps increase energy and reduce stress.

We know that developing a regular exercise routine can be challenging at first. But always remember that you don’t have to push yourself too hard. There are a lot of gentle exercises that will help you achieve your goal and feel good about yourself.
